All ready to hit the water with your new jet ski? Not so fast.
You saved some money and finally have enough to purchase a toy you always wanted. A new jet ski. You are dreaming about all the fun and places you can go on the water. Your new watercraft is all clean and gassed up. You are ready hit the water and enjoy the day. Sounds like a great way to spend the day, especially on a hot summer day. I’m not trying to spoil your fun on the water but there a few things to think about.
Being able to enjoy the water on your jet ski requires a little thought on safety, etiquette and following the rules of the water. This will ensure your enjoyment. Make sure you obey the right of way. Boats have the right of way and if you are to cross paths with a jet ski or boat, the one on the right has the right of way. Collisions are the most common type of accident on a jet ski so make sure you know you surroundings and where other watercrafts are. If you do cross paths with a boat , make sure they don’t block your field of vision. Also a larger boat might not be able to maneuver out of your way.
When enjoying your watercraft you need to obey all posted speed limits and no wake zones. Driving on the water is similar to driving on the road. You might have to drive slower then the post limit if the waterway is congested. Blatant disregard for the speed limits can lead to a ticket or even an accident. Besides being aware of the speed limit you should protect yourself with the proper safety gear. This should include a life vest, goggles, shoes and gloves to prevent slipping when the jet ski or handles are wet. A safety lanyard should also be worn. If you fall or are thrown from your jet ski it will kill the engine.
A good idea for having fun on the water encompasses a few things. Safety equipment, being aware of your surroundings, weather conditions and speed limits. Make sure your watercraft is well maintained to avoid breaking down and being stuck on the water. Carry a phone in a watertight case in case on an emergency. Having your jet ski checked by the Coast Guard can help keep you safe. We at Central Ridge Insurers do recommend having your jet ski insured to protect your water toy from damage due to a accident and personal injury.
